I rifled through my DD 227 for the first time in a while, it's the start of the Born Again storyline. And I picked up a word I don't recall using in my lifetime...
"an efficacious opponent" ponders Fisk, as he wonders what to do with Matt after he gets his kicks torturing him....
Sounds like a word I should use on my opponents in blitz chess, especially when they kick my arse.

There used to be a thread about the music you associate with various comics and speaking of the early Miller and MacKenzie/Miller era of Daredevil, I just remembered that I associate Van Morrison's album Wavelength with those comics. That was his latest album around that time and it was also the first Van Morrison record I bought new for myself, and it's still one of my favourites. I particularly recall getting into the track Natalia - maybe because it vaguely sounded a bit like Natasha? Not sure if that was the connection, but I believe Black Widow did make a guest appearance sometime around then. But anyway, it was the album as a whole that I remember listening a lot while reading those issues. Now that it's come back to me, I'll be sure to dig out the cd the next time I'm reading them and wallow in the nostalgia!

Is blitz chess the same as what we used to call lightning chess? Where the players make their moves immediately, playing by instinct rather than serious contemplation? I used to love that, even though it frequently meant getting clobbered.
Cei-U! I summon the lightning... chess!

Lightning chess sounds like 'bullet chess'....same principle and the game lasts exactly one minute (per player, so the timer is a weopon). The blitz games are 3 minutes up....I love those with a cup of coffee.

BTW, the The last issues before Miller took over had some stellar Colan/Janson art. That page is from DD #153, which Tony DeZuniga inked.

But also, Daredevil #157 had some stellar art from Colan and Janson.

I love the way Colan drew The Beast, simultaneously charming and scary.
Cei-U! I summon the frightening furball!

I'd have to dig out the issues to see if I still feel the same way, but at the time I thought there was a big difference between the Colan/Janson artwork in DD#124 and what the same duo produced in #157. How much of that difference was due to one guy or the other is hard to pin down but I think they both changed. From memory, I preferred #124 but Janson was never a great fit for Colan, to my eyes. The Colan artwork in Howard the Duck didn't look nearly as good after he took over from Steve Leialoha as inker.
