At least pre-Crisis, and even up to 1990 or so when there were eleventy-jillion Batman titles and I lost track. She debuted in a Batman comic (along with Tiger Moth!) but got her origin in a Wonder Woman story and mostly showed up on villain teams like the Injustice League, the Suicide Squad and the anti-Super-Friends where she had a kid sidekick wait did I dream that? Now-a-days she’s mostly a Harley Quinn “supporting” character. Only ended up fighting Batman on her own a small handful of times.
BUT she’s still considered primarily a Batman villain, although that’s not been the case since 1966.
So in this thread name characters who are associated with a specific hero but probably shouldn’t be.

Isn't she more associated with Batman because of the Batman tv show from the 60s? I think I once read that they wanted more female villains and she was specifically created to answer that call.

Huh. The timeline checks out and the first Poison Ivy story did introduce four female villains.

Yeah, including cameos she appeared in like a dozen episodes plus a couple more in the later "New Batman Adventure" season. Plus she was one of the main bad guys in the live action "Batman and Robin" movie played by Uma Thurman. The 90's was totally the rise of Poison Ivy as a major Batman villain.

Oh yeah it probably was the cartoon that promoted her to major villain status. I didn’t think of that. Same thing for Mister Freeze.

I’ve been reading a lot about Poison Ivy lately, and I don’t have a source, but I also vaguely remember reading that Poison Ivy (and Tiger Moth!) was created to give the TV show more female villains. Poison Ivy honestly feels like a generic Batman ‘66 villain in her first appearance. TBH - and this is not an original thought - Batman 181 coulda replaced P. I. with Catwoman without changing the narrative at all.

I've always considered the Rhino a Spider-Man villain first and foremost because of the classic ASM #41-43 and his appearances in the 60's cartoon, but he went on to appear in the Hulk more often (and even faced him in the Defenders).

I remember a Batman/Poison Ivy story gorgeously illustrated by P. Craig Russell. Legends of the Dark Knight maybe?

I remember a Batman/Poison Ivy story gorgeously illustrated by P. Craig Russell. Legends of the Dark Knight maybe? Yup; "Hothouse." While not created for the tv show, but in response to the popularity of Catwoman in the show and the request for more female villains. She did not make the transition to tv, though and they created their own female characters, like Anne Baxter's Olga, Queen of Cossacks (and Zelda the Great), Caroline Jones' Marsha, Queen of Diamonds, Joan Collins, as the Siren, Shelly Winters, as Ma Parker, Tallulah Bankhead, as the Black Widow (different widow, same dress sense), Barbara Rush, as Nora Clavicle, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, as Minerva (plus Ida Lupino, Glynis Johns, Ethel merman, and Dina Merrill, in double acts, with male villains, plus the molls and henchwomen). Her debut, from Batman #181....

Oh yeah it probably was the cartoon that promoted her to major villain status. I didn’t think of that. Same thing for Mister Freeze. The 90s were Ivy's renaissance. I suspect spurred on by her appearances in BTAS, and the accompanying Batman Adventures comic book, this was when she was re-imagined from a generic seductress/plant-themed villain into being an eco-terrorist , thereby giving her identity well and truly distinct from Catwoman.
Interestingly, both the Riddler and Mr. Freeze owe their popularity to the 1960s TV series. The Rddler had only appeared twice (both in the late 40s) before the show, while Mr. Freeze had only appeared once (as Mr. Zero). The TV show established them as regular members of Batman's rogues gallery.
Frank Gorshin's amazing portrayal of the Riddler pretty much cemented how the Riddler has been portrayed every since (we don't talk about Jim Carey ), and Gorshin even created the green jacket and bowler hat costume because he disliked the jumpsuit. However, Mr. Freeze remained a one-note villain until BTAS gave him the tragic backstory that has became central to every portrayal ever since. (The comics once attempted to incorporate the stupid 'my suit is powered by diamonds' angle from the Batman & Robin movie, but this was thankfully short-lived and everyone just pretends that it never happened.)
